About the Item

An extraordinary hand-forged iron and handmade tile table from the 1920s, blending Spanish craftsmanship with early California artistry. The wrought iron base—made in Spain—features a bold, architectural presence, with intersecting cross-stretcher supports and forged scroll elements that recall ancient Roman furniture forms. The workmanship is expressive and muscular, yet finely balanced, giving the table a sculptural silhouette from every angle. The structure evokes a strong design lineage—its elemental, handcrafted quality reminiscent of Diego Giacometti’s poetic bronze furniture, where mass and line are in perfect dialogue. There’s a quiet strength to the base: architectural in its geometry, organic in its execution. The top is fitted with richly glazed handmade tiles crafted in Los Angeles in the 1920s—during the height of the Spanish Colonial Revival movement, when Southern California homes embraced Mediterranean materials and local craft traditions. The tiles have an engobe-style matte finish, likely wood- or gas-fired, with painterly variations in glaze and depth of color. Each tile reads like a unique object; together, they form a surface that feels both intentional and naturally worn-in. Almost certainly made for one of the early Spanish Revival homes in Hollywood, this table carries with it the elegance and soul of an era defined by craftsmanship and eclectic influence. Personally used for over a decade, it’s a versatile piece—functioning beautifully as a drink table, side table, or sculptural pedestal. With its material richness, historical depth, and strong sculptural presence, it stands equally as a functional object and as a piece of architectural furniture.
