About the Item
This is a wooden workbench from the first half of the 20th century in Japan, a piece with its stately construction and long history. Katsura and horse chestnut wood are used for the top panel, and sturdy zelkova wood is used for the legs. This workbench is characterized by its solid construction and massive feel, especially the top panel, which is thick at 5.8 cm and weighs as much as 33.55 kg. Such a solid construction is hard to find nowadays.
The top panel has been used for many years, and the texture of time has been carved into it. The grain of the wood is faintly visible, and small scratches and scuffs from use seem to tell the story of the history of the piece. On the surface of the wood, you can feel the traces of the Japanese people's lives over the years. In particular, the roundness and soft curl of the wood's edge gives it a unique warmth that gives the viewer a peaceful impression.
In addition, there is a slight rattling of the top board due to the twisting of the wood. If this is a concern, a rubber plate can be placed between the toes to stabilize it.
This workbench works wonderfully with a low sofa. It will become a part of your interior design, such as under your TV to display your audio equipment and books. In addition, its deep texture and massive feel will bring a quiet strength and serenity to any space.
Size: W179.8cm x D51cm (including protruding legs), depth of top panel only: 48.6cm x H25cm
Weight: 33.55 kg
You can feel the history of Japan layered with time in this furniture.
[We are a specialized team dealing in antiques and vintage items, comprised of stores based on three distinct brands. While focusing on Japanese items, we also offer a carefully curated selection of attractive goods from around the world—each evoking the culture and history of its country of origin.
Unlike the traditional Japanese antique furniture and art that have been appreciated overseas until now, we shine a light on the tools and furniture that were used for many years in ordinary Japanese homes and farmhouses. These objects have gained a unique charm over time, their beauty deepened by the history accumulated through daily life. In today’s world, however, many of these precious items are discarded during home demolitions. We are committed to reassessing their value and passing them on to future generations.
Drawing from our extensive experience—having seen tens of thousands of items through direct purchases, markets, and auction houses—we carefully select and present only the most captivating pieces. This is something made possible only through the years of knowledge and expertise we have cultivated.
Rather than focusing on the widely known facets of Japanese art and culture, we highlight the subtle beauty born from the everyday life of common people. It is this rediscovered beauty, steeped in history, that we strive to share with the world.]

Antique Japanese wooden coffee table / 1868-1920 / sofa table / display stand
Located in Sammu-shi, Chiba
This wooden low table, known as a fuzukue (writing desk), was made in Japan between the late Edo and Meiji periods (circa 1868-1920). A writing desk is a traditional Japanese piece of furniture, originally a small desk used while sitting on a tatami mat. While primarily used as a practical tool for writing, reading, and writing letters, its dignified presence has led to its current popularity as a decorative table and low table.
This writing desk is crafted from Japanese zelkova (keyaki) wood. Zelkova is a precious wood that has long been beloved by the Japanese people and is known for its use in shrine and temple construction. Due to its solid, hard wood with particularly beautiful grain, it is often used for luxury furniture and crafts. The tabletop features the beautiful annual ring pattern, known as "bamboo shoot grain," characteristic of zelkova. Combined with the rich texture borne over time, this wood exudes a quiet, engaging charm.
The tabletop is carved from a single piece of wood and shows slight warping, but is generally in very good condition. The legs are simple and sturdy, indicating they have withstood years of use. There's no wobble, making it safe to use in modern living spaces.
At just 23cm high, it's perfect for pairing with a sofa or zaisu chair...
