About the Item

This wooden writing desk, known as a "Fu-zukue", dates back to the late Edo to Meiji period. Tatami culture has long been an integral part of Japanese life, where people sat on the floor to carry out daily tasks. This type of desk was commonly used for writing letters, studying, or as a workbench for artisans. Believed to have originated in Nagano, Niigata, or northern Kanto, its dark patina is a result of years of exposure to hearth smoke and candle soot, which has deeply settled into the wood. Made of cedar, the desk's grain exhibits a refined, wabi-sabi aesthetic, embodying the beauty of imperfection. While structurally stable, the natural twisting of the wood has introduced slight unevenness. A small section of the leg is missing, though this does not impact its functionality. This exceptional Fu-zukue is among the finest of its kind, a rare and highly collectible piece. Weight: 5.75kg We specialize in Japanese folk tools and antiques, distinct from the fine art and furniture traditionally appreciated abroad. These everyday objects, once cherished in rural homes and farmhouses, have acquired a unique patina over time. However, with the demolition of old houses, many such pieces are now at risk of being lost. Our mission is to re-evaluate and preserve these fascinating historical objects. Having examined tens of thousands of artifacts, we carefully curate only the most remarkable examples. Beyond well-known Japanese art, we seek to rediscover and share the understated beauty of daily life—the aesthetics shaped by ordinary people and their culture—bringing these treasures to the world.
