Fixed Table in Hardwood with Japanese Joinery and Danish Aesthetics

About the Item

During a residence in Kyoto, Japan, studying Japanese wood joinery, One of Figure Grounds' Founding Partners, Tyler Putnam, struck inspiration for this table. There was never enough space to host dinner parties in tiny apartments in modern cities. The table design expands on the Dutch Pull Out Table typology of the medieval ages and fuses it with modern aesthetics and constructed by Japanese joinery techniques. In an instance of a feast, the Pullout table originally allowed royal families to open their table for unexpected guests, without the disturbance of setting, bottles of wine, or even conversation for that matter. However, these old tables have been unsightly at worst and beasts of girth at best. Enter Japanese carpentry. The structural beams and skirt become one through carving exacting voids. This piece opens like a spaceship to resolve the table leaf extensions without any hardware! As the host, you transform your living room from a small intimate breakfast table, pulling out the leaves into a full dining table. This unique and delicate addition will make your dinner party a memento. This item is available in custom sizes or finishes upon request; please send us a message. Due to natural materials used, the object received will be unique in material figuring and coloration. No Item assembly or installation is necessary. Care for the object is minimal and can be conditioned every 2 years to maintain the original finish. All of our pieces are originally designed and handmade in the Brooklyn, NY based Figure+Ground studio; we don't believe in the separation of design and fabrication. Each item is handcrafted, serialized, and shipped with a certificate of authenticity, documenting its place in history. Own an Original Figure+Ground Piece. We offer this piece as a fixed design as well. Please inquire for customizations. #FIGUREGROUND_
