About the Item

André Groult, pair of tea trays, wood, France, 1930s. These folding tea trays are designed by André Groult. One piece is all black whereas the other piece is black and orange, both forming a strong singular item even though they are not large. The model is nicknamed Geisha due to the simplified aesthetics and strict build up that is derived from Japanese design. The piece is simplistic and architectural when seen in the context of Groult's larger oeuvre where bold and daring forms are leading. The pieces are sculptural and even when folded keep a strong presence due to the cubist, abstract shapes that these pieces hold. Groult and his wife were well-connected within Paris’s art scene of the beginnen of the twentieth century, therefore the Groults established personal and professional relationships with numerous artists, including those belonging to the Cubist circles whose inspiration can with some imagination be seen in the use of angular, overlapping forms and shapes of these trays. The trays are in excellent condition with outstanding traces of age and use, we advise to maintain its current condition. André Groult (27 August 1884-1966) was a furniture designer and interior designer who worked on the border of modernism and traditionalism. He rejected the leading art nouveau style and instead worked in an adapted variant of Art Deco. His style can therefore be referred to as Post-Art Nouveau. The body of his oeuvre is thus in the style of Art Deco but he always stepped out to very bold and curved forms and shapes, making a very personal design language. On of his most prestigious commissions was in 1935 when Groult designed the furnishings of the first-class cabins on the ocean liner SS Normandie.
