About the Item

ANTIQUE DRESSING TABLE A decorative and good-quality country house dressing table on a larger-than-average scale. A practical configuration with eleven drawers of differing sizes surrounding a central kneehole section and a large tilting dressing mirror above. In the Gothic Revival Taste with nods to the Aesthetic Movement. Made from a mixture of different woods believed to include mahogany, walnut, ash, boxwood and ebony with inlaid marquetry and ebonised decoration typical of the gothic style. Raised on four original Cope & Collinson ceramic castors stamped ‘C&C Patent’. Dating from somewhere between 1860 and 1880. Brass makers label for ‘Collier & Plucknett, Cabinetmakers, and Upholsterers, Warwick & Leamington’. Collier and Plucknett were best known for their Gothic revival furniture in the Victorian period. Perhaps their best-known commission was for the furniture for Tyntesfield country house in Somerset, where they created some very impressive furniture and fittings still present today, including a grand bedroom suite featuring a similar washstand to this (Now in the National Trust collection). Another similar Collier & Plucknett bedroom suite, Lot 58 at The Contents of Berwick Hall sale sold under the hammer with Dreweatts in 2021 for £48,000. The dressing table is largely in good order. It is solid and sturdy, the drawers run smoothly and it is a very usable piece of furniture. It is in its original country house condition, so there is some wear throughout that is consistent with age and use, mainly on the table top. One of the small drawer handles on the top right-hand drawer is a replacement and some of the other handles have some small missing pieces but are all functioning and solid. There is a small crack on one upper back panel visible from behind, but this doesn’t appear to be a structural problem. Approximate measurements 137cm wide x 164cm high x 60cm deep. The table top is 73.5cm high.
