About the Item

A highly unusual and decorative pepper pot in sterling silver, designed in the form of a naturalistic champagne cork. Executed with crossed pegs for easier opening and a realistically textured “stem.” The base unscrews, and the interior is gilded. The piece is fully hallmarked with the maker’s mark of Henry Wilkinson & Co (Sheffield, England), assayed and stamped at the Sheffield Assay Office in 1879. In addition to the standard British silver hallmarks, including the lion passant guaranteeing a silver purity of 925/1000, it also bears the rare British design registration mark – the so-called “kite mark” – on the underside, confirming that the design was officially registered on 13 March 1880. This example is particularly unique, as it was originally commissioned by the famous champagne house G.H. Mumm, one of the world’s most renowned producers. The piece represents a rare example of Victorian novelty silver design, where everyday objects were transformed into luxurious and playful works of art in silver.
