The period known as the Space Age or Space Age was the post Atomic Age, that is, the late 50's and early 70's. It is part of the “stylings” that reigned in the US during the 20th century.
The concept of an optimistic world based on a possible "Earth of Tomorrow" reigned by the dominance of atomic energy and space travel.
This "Styling" is inspired by the North American space race, but above all, the aesthetics based on Science Fiction, space satellites, helmets, ships, the effect of weightlessness and a "cinematic" proposal of a new style. of life of the future. Movies like Barbarella 1968, James Bond, Space Odyssey 2001,
These aesthetics influenced all fields of design (architecture, products, interiors, clothing, graphics, textiles, etc...) unlike the Atomic Age, these aesthetics were not intended to decorate a product of dubious quality, but would influence great designers
CHARACTERISTICS
Spherical morphology:
Morphologies of the atomic age are abandoned, such as: Kidney or boomerang shapes, speed fins in cars and mushroom-shaped lamps, and the sphere is adopted as the main morphological reference, referring to satellites or space helmets. The great variety of cultural influences of this time, expanded the color palette, achieving innovative results with:
- Intense colors such as the magenta palette, passing through red, orange and yellow related to pop culture and psychedelia.
-Black and white linked to Op art
-Silver and transparencies which made more reference to the Space Age.
Almost all color palettes include tones that are related to each other. If in other times all the tones in a palette had a more than obvious relationship with each other, in the sixties that relationship is much lighter, and responds much more to brightness or saturation, than to the base or composition of the final color.
At that time we found intense shades of a psychedelic appearance,
Synthetic glitter pigments were created at the beginning of the 20th century, while synthetic glitter dyes are an invention of the 1960s, although they did not show great resistance to the passage of time and eventually lost their shine.
For the dye industry, it was essential to achieve a range of artificial pigments capable of resisting the effect of chemical products and ultraviolet rays, but it would not be until years later with the great development experienced by the petrochemical and plastic industry when this was would become a reality.
Plastics:
The evolution to achieve more resistant plastics, foam rubber and more defined colors, allowed a greater use of this material, previously used for smaller pieces such as radio casings or tableware. This is how they began to appear: minivan chairs such as the Panton or the UNIVERSALE, by Joe Colombo (Kartell, 1968), storage furniture such as the “body Trolley by Joe Colombo (1970), furniture with a pneumatic structure such as the “Apollo” series by Quasar Khanh or the Blow seat (De Pas, D'Urbino, Lomazzi, Scolari, 1967).
The opulent lifestyle that was generated in the recovered nations such as Italy, France and England, generated in the 60's new scenarios where the glamorous life was to develop. The movement known as Good Design would put aside the furniture designed for the domestic and would lean towards this new lifestyle, that is how they would concentrate on semi-public areas of the European and American elite such as bars, clubs and hotels.
This furniture was characterized by having an extroverted aesthetic, with bright colors and a more scenic character.
The magazines portrayed well-known international Jet Set characters in sophisticated environments reserved for very few.
