A vibrant oil painting of vividly colored shapes by the American artist Andrew Masullo (b. 1957). In a 2012 New York Times article by Carol Kino, she notes that though Masullo's oil paintings are modestly sized, their impact is large. She writes that "their sparsely spaced forms can suggest the spiritual order of De Stijl. . ." His work has also been referred to as "pure painting" because it is not inspired by any pre-conceived conceptual or theoretical ideas. He writes ". . . I start from scratch, and I never know where I'm starting or where I'm going." Masullo refers to his paintings as nonobjective instead of abstract explaining that his art is not about abstraction or representation but "seeing the world in a different kind of way." In a description of his work by the Whitney Museum, it is noted that though Masullo's paintings are "deceptively simple arrays of shapes and colors," he "creates complex conversations among form, color, and surface. Masullo's work was included in the 2012 Whitney Biennial (34 of his paintings) and he has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Signed, titled and dated on verso. Includes Andrew Emmerich gallery label.
