"Bicycle Thieves Tour of Italy 2013"

About the Item

Luigi Milani, Frassinelle Polesine (Rovigo) 1957 "Bicycle Thieves Tour of Italy 2013" Tesserae made from used bicycle tires on wooden board cm 185 x 126 Artwork created by the artist for the arrival of the 2013 Giro d'Italia in Brescia and displayed, during the gala dinner and awards ceremony, in the Vanvitellian Hall of Palazzo Loggia (photo 10) The artist created the work by attaching the tiles, cut from strictly used, old and worn bicycle tires, by means of special adhesives and small screws, to a wooden board. The tires, chosen for their lived-in exterior and coloring, are assembled in a particular "order" decided upon by the artist, resulting in a particularly homogeneous and pleasing composition. In this case Luigi Milani, has created, in the central part of the work, a pink frame, a clear reference to the color of the jersey that distinguishes the leader and therefore the winner of 'important cycling race. Analyzing the work in particular, we can point out two additional important features: the first is that the different placement of the tiles optically divides the work into two halves vertically, which, depending on the angle from which the work is viewed, make an opposite chiaroscuro impression. The second (which does not stand out in natural light) is rendered by the inclusion in the composition of tire parts having small reflectors, which when illuminated with an artificial light "light up." An example can be seen in the published photograph taken with flash. Luigi Milani was born in 1957 in Frassinelle Polesine (Rovigo), and has always been inclined to painting as a creative need; he initially painted female portraits of pop and metropolitan inspiration, gaining considerable success. Since 2008 he has focused on 'informal using bicycle tire parts with which he manages to embellish and transform a simple material into a lace that resembles a Persian carpet, where, harmony balance and sense of color enchant. Since then, the typology of Luigi Milani's works has changed, with a focus on the avant-garde of the twentieth century and drawing from the conceptual he focuses his attention on Arte Povera, which is distinguished by its rejection of traditional means of expression in place of "non-artistic" materials, both natural and industrial, taken in their primary expressiveness and sensory immediacy. Evolution in Milani, as with most artists of value, was not long in coming. For Milani, the use of bicycle tires, is rooted in the memory of a childhood far away. It also represents the symbol of a carefreeness and freedom that, for those with artistic talent, must be daily bread, imperative to shape their creativity. This material, which now composes like a mosaic, thus has an evocative value of the carefree part of life, when by play with a bicycle one could even reach the ends of the earth. It is the time when the foundations of a personality are laid, those stimuli then destined to become artistic goads are created. Perhaps this is precisely why Milani, in fixing his childhood memories in the form of bicycle tires, enshrines them forever. Luigi Milani's works can be found in numerous private collections in Italy and abroad.
