About the Item

"Harlequin" 1965 color lithograph cm 63x46 Bottom left EA and signed lower right in pencil. Il Bisonte publisher, Florence. In frame Provenance Private collection Milan Sphere Gallery, Modena Bibliography F. Meloni "Gino Severini. All Works Graphics" Libreria Prandi, Reggio Emilia, 1982, ill. p. 102, no. 43 Gino Severini (Cortona, April 7, 1883 - Paris, February 26, 1966) was an Italian painter who knew how to combine science and art, constructive rigor and inventive imagination, reaching the most complete expressive happiness when, between 1910 and 1915, he grafted the dynamic values of Futurism onto the constructive values of Cubism. .Born in Cortona, he arrived at the age of 16 in Rome. Here Giacomo Balla initiated him into Divisionist painting, which he deepened in Paris beginning in 1906 (Spring in Montmartre, 1909). He was among the signatories in 1910 of the Manifesto of Futurism written by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. In Paris he was in contact with Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Juan Gris, and Guillaume Apollinaire, and participated in the birth and development of Cubism. In 1913 he married Jeanne, the daughter of the poet Paul Fort, from whom three children were born: Gina (1915), Romana (1937) and Jaques (1927-1933) who died prematurely.Between October 1917 and August 1918 he published a series of articles entitled La Peinture d'avant-garde in the magazine De Stijl. Theo van Doesburg called Severini's style psychisch kubisme (Italian: psychic cubism). Moving to Paris in 1906 to study the transalpine painting of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, Severini became acquainted with many of the leading exponents of the artistic avant-garde in the French capital, including Paul Signac, Georges Braque, Juan Gris, Amedeo Modigliani, Pablo Picasso, and the poets Guillaume Apollinaire, Paul Fort, and Max Jacob. Despite this stay in Paris, he does not break his contacts with Italy. In fact, after joining the Futurist movement at the invitation of Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, he was one of the signatories in 1910 of the Futurist painting manifesto along with Balla, Boccioni, Carrà, and Russolo. In 1912 he urged Umberto Boccioni and Carlo Carrà to join him in Paris where, he organized the first exhibition of the Futurists at the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery. He then participated in subsequent Futurist exhibitions in Europe and the United States. In 1913 his first solo exhibition was held at the Marlborough Gallery in London, which was later shown at Der Sturm Gallery in Berlin. During this Parisian period, Severini played an important role as a liaison between French and Italian artistic circles, especially between Cubist and Futurist sensibilities. A frequenter of cabarets, Severini very effectively and originally depicted that nocturnal world of light and dance in masterpieces such as The Pan Pan Dance at Monico (1911), Dynamic Hieroglyphic of the Bal Tabarin and Dancer in Blue (1912), arriving at a kaleidoscopic vision in which space and time, present and past, together and particular come together in a feast of light and color.
