About the Item

For sale is an original signed museum-quality Magnum photographic print by the renowned documentary photographer Susan Meiselas (American, b. 1948). Titled "Pandora’s Box, Client Lounge, New York City, USA, 1995", this Magnum print (printed later) was a time-limited, hand-signed edition that was only available to purchase for a period of five days. The work is signed in black ink by the artist on an affixed archival label, which carries the image’s accompanying text and is printed on Fuji Crystal Archive Matte paper. It is mounted and presented in an elegant dark grey oak-wood veneered aluminium frame. Lauded documentary photographer Susan Meiselas has been working at the nexus of history, politics, ethnography, art, and storytelling throughout her prolific career, producing multi-layered photographic narratives about individuals and societies across the U.S. and the world. Sensitive to both the potential and limitations of images, the 1992 MacArthur Fellow approaches her projects aware of their inevitable impartiality and incompleteness, supplementing her own photographs with texts, interviews, archival images, and other forms of documentation. “My projects are authored but I’d like to think they are not authoritative,” she says. Among Meiselas’s best-known works are Carnival Strippers (1972-75), an unflinching, tender look at carnival striptease performers; Nicaragua (1978-79), bold coverage of the Nicaraguan insurrection; and Kurdistan: In the Shadow of History (1992-98), a book, website, and exhibition forming an archive of Kurdish history. Titled "Pyongyang, North Korea. 1997", this Magnum print was a time-limited edition that was only available to purchase for a period of five days. The piece is mounted in a white lacquered frame. The accompanying text by the artist reads: “North Korea is maybe the most surreal country on Earth. Being there is like walking around on a film set. People don’t want to engage with a foreigner, such as myself, but I loved coming across this baby, who was very happy to stare right back at me!” Martin Parr thinks of his photography as an ongoing investigation of human interaction, leisure, and context. Parr is interested in how people live and present themselves to others, particularly in how they display their values. His subjects have included the spectators of a championship polo game...
