Bold textured Mid Century Modern Abstract Painting by Jose Guadiana (1929-2012), dynamic composition in blue, yellow, green and brown. Heavy impasto oil painting on canvas, wood stretcher with simple gray wood frame. Signed and dated on back. Guadiana was known to most San Antonio artists and curators after his arrival in 1966, having been a member of the local group of Hispanic artists called “La Palomilla,” which included Jesse Almazán, Jesús Cantú, José Esquivel, Alberto Mijangos, and Armando Sánchez. His fanciful stone, bas-relief wall mural titled Students, still watches proudly from the north face of UTSA’s Downtown Frio Street Building. By the time of his arrival from Mexico, Guadiana was already an accomplished artist, having studied in Mexico City’s famous art school, La Esmeralda. He also assisted Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siquieros on mural commissions, as well as Federico Cantú...
