About the Item
Like a hidden narrative moment frozen in glazed tile, this mid-century modern panel by David Holleman invites reflection and discovery. At its core are two elegantly rendered sgraffito scenes: one portrays what appears to be a surgical tableau, while below, a psychological evaluation unfolds—both scenes etched with expressive clarity into dark tile surfaces. Above them arches a geometric motif, inscribed in delicate lines that add visual cadence and poetic restraint to the composition.
Surrounding these central illustrations is a mosaic of rich, subtly varied tiles—metallic golds, vibrant glassy blues, deep reds, marbled slate, and warm terra-cotta tones coalesce into a chromatic frame of textured energy. The panel’s tactile luminosity and tonal depth transform it into not just art, but an object both visual and tactile in its presence.
Framed in teak trim and bordered by a sleek black wood surround, the piece conceals its complexity within elegant mid-century lines. Signed discreetly in the lower right, and equipped with a wire on the back, the panel is ready to hang and captivate.
At approximately 15.5 inches wide, 29⅜ inches high, and under two inches deep, its scale feels intimate yet commanding—compact enough for thoughtful placement yet substantial enough to anchor a vignette. It is rendered in original vintage condition, appearing beautifully preserved with no notable wear, conveying both authenticity and refined stewardship.
This piece embodies a rare merger of Holleman’s technical mastery, figurative ambition, and ceramic innovation—reminiscent of his larger commissions in public and institutional spaces, though here distilled into a meticulously intimate format. Holleman’s storied career includes over 50 mosaic tile murals for churches, hospitals, and colleges, and his works hold places in prestigious collections, including museum and academic institutions nationwide.
Decorative Holleman mosaic panels of comparable size and provenance typically fetch strong interest at auction, with more narrative-rich examples often commanding the upper range of sales.
More than decoration, this panel is a conversation piece, a collectible, and a rare glimpse into Holleman’s visionary language—offering the discerning collector both historical resonance and timeless mid-century artistry.
Mid-Century Modern era mosaic tile art panel by celebrated artist, David Holleman (1927-2020). Holleman is a prolific artist with a storied career spanning the better part of the 20th century and into the 21st. During his time serving with the US Army in Berlin, he became influenced by German Expressionist painter Carl Hofer. Once Holleman returned to the US he turned to ceramics as his primary medium. Despite winning national prizes for his pottery, he endeavored to further explore the medium. Holleman began working with his hallmark, mosaic tiles. Holleman produced over 50 mosaic tile murals in churches, temples, hospitals, colleges, and private collections in the USA and worldwide. In addition, Holleman exhibited throughout the world with his works held in private and museum collections.
Much of Holleman’s work explores the human experience, often borrowing themes from literature or the bible. These scenes are illustrated on sgraffito tiles… etched lines contrasting the top glaze. This piece features two sgraffito medical scenes. The top scene depicts what appears to be a surgery. The lower illustration appears to be a psychological exam. There is an arch of geometric sgraffito drawings above the two scenes. The entire panel is decorated in a mosaic of small gold metallic, glassy blue, red, marbled slate, and terra cotta colored tiles. The piece is assembled on a wood panel, framed in teak trim and black wood. Holleman’s signature is present at lower right. This piece has a wire on back, ready to hang. The mosaic is undated, but our guess is 1950's.
