Early 19th Century Needlework "Show Towel" Dated 1836
About the Item
Lovely early 19th century "show towel" likely from Pennsylvania. Show towels were special towels with decorative accents stitched into the fabric - often displayed when company comes to visit and part of a bride's trousseau, showing off her needlework and lacework talents. This lovely example is expertly framed under UV protectant glass. It notes the maker's name at the top "Markret H Niller" and a date of 1836 in pale pink stitching. Other decorative pink and blue needlework elements include numerous flowers, dogs, cats, peacocks, assorted geometric patterns, and tridents. With patterned lacework at bottom terminating in fringe.
