English 19th Century Portrait of a Gentleman

About the Item

An English 19th century portrait of a gentleman, oil on canvas, original frame and stretcher, crackle paint typical of older paintings of this vintage. There is the remnants of an old gallery label only partial visible due to peeling, also has a back patch repair paper. The original gilt frame is in fair condition, with minor loss to edges, new wire and eye hooks. The painting in the frame measures 32 1/2"- inches high x 27 1/4"- inches wide, The portrait painting in the stretcher only measures 26 3/4"- inches x 22"-inches wide.

The girl is wearing a knee-length dress with short puffed sleeves and long stockings. She is feeding a goat with flowers and grass from her apron. The original "Shepherdess of the Alps" appears to have been a play by Marmontel, which enjoyed great popularity in France, England, and America in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
