About the Item
The twelve piece ceramic ensemble "The History Of Rome" towered over the ship's barrel ceilinged double deck Roman Restaurant. At its base, the captain's table hosted the VICTORIA's most elite passengers.
This is one of the largest and most well known examples of his shipboard works. It was carefully removed from the VICTORIA during her demolition in 2004 and remains in excellent condition. The surface is uniquely glazed and every detail in this magnificent ensemble tells its own story, gleaned from the mythology and history of the Roman City State.
Emanuele Luzzati's shipboard contributions go back many decades. In collaboration with the great triumvirate of Italian designers Gio Ponti, Nino Zoncada, and Gustavo Pulitzer-Finale, he and other key artists contributed works that adorned a gamut of famous ships from CONTE BIANCAMANO to ANDREA DORIA and OCEANIC. Luzzati is well known in Italy, not just for his ceramics, but his paintings, illustrations (several children's books), stage designs, and and Oscar-nominated animation. There is a museum and gallery in Genoa dedicated to his works. He died on Saturday, January 24, 2007.
