Important Set of 15 Dutch Delft Tiles with Fleur De Lis Design, 17th Century
About the Item
A set of 15 Dutch Delft tiles with Fleur de Lis or French Lily decoration.
The Netherlands.
Made circa 1600 - 1620.
An important en rare set of 15 tiles with on each the decoration of five French lilies. This polychrome execution is one of the rarest types of Dutch ornamental tiles, especially to have survived the ages in such quantity. In the late Dutch Renaissance / early Golden Age ornamental designs were in fashion. The reason this design is rare has probably a link with the political situation of the Dutch Republic at that time. The Fleur de Lis is the symbol of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph. Although Catholics were tolerated, the main religion was Protestant.
A wonderful design that really comes to life with a larger quantity of tiles.
