Iridescent Art Nouveau Wall Tile "Birch Forest" by Alexandre Marius for BACS

About the Item

This piece was executed by Maurice Alexandre. BACS - EDON ROC, CAP D’ANTIBES, FRANCE (1912-1927) BACS workshop was formed by four colleagues employed by Clement Massier: Jean Barol, a glaze specialist; Maurice (Mauris) Alexandre, a painter; Jean Carle, a decorator; and Francois Sicard, a potter. Using the first letter of their last names to create an acronym, atelier BACS opened in 1912. The ceramists were financed by George Massa, a Parisian architect, on whose property, Eden-Roc in Cap d’Antibes, their workshop was located. Past experience at Massier’s studio shows in BACS’ own metallic lusterware. Beginning in 1920 until the workshop ceased in 1927, many of BACS ceramics are distinguished by their signature technique of applying high-fired enamel cloisonne which lends contrast through opacity to enhance their metallic and iridescent lusterware.

He and Ehrenbock formalized their partnership in 1907.
