About the Item

Mesmerizing contemporary Japanese handcrafted traditional Oshie wall decorative art form using high quality kimono silk and brocade fabrics, known as oshie (literally, “pressed pictures”) that goes back to the Edo period (1603-1868). It is said this art form was born of the reluctance of ladies of the court and elite aristocratic women to discard the magnificent silk kimonos and brocaded obi they had donned for a lifetime. The solution was to recycle these opulent fabrics into stunning works of art. Highly detailed Oshie pieces contain hundreds of small pieces expertly aligned, to recreate the works of Japan’s most celebrated traditional paintings in the minutest details, notably in the beloved bijin-ga (beautiful women) tradition. Oshie resembles a carefully crafted very intricate jigsaw puzzle comprising numerous intricate pieces of wadded kimono silk and brocade fabric expertly put together to create a relief design art piece, an undulating three-dimesional picture. Painstaking and time-consuming attention to details is entailed in recreating each elaborate kimono, head wear and intricate painting of facial features in miniature-like exactitude. The end product is a mesmerizing piece with a surprising three-dimensional effect. This graceful oshie piece depicts a lady of high standing caught in the snow and struggling to shelter herself from the elements with her regally appointed purple umbrella. Her pristine white headwear and broad obi that comes together to form a flowing trail of brocade speak of her life of privilege, as do the tortoise-shell ornamental hairpins designed to keep her elaborate coiffure in place. The grey tufts that peak from her sleeves tell us that she came prepared for the cold, if not for the snow. With each graceful step she takes, the folds of her multi-layered kimono are exposed, creating a suggestive scene that communicates her surprise at the sudden change in weather and the snow that is quickly gathering on her umbrella. Please note the artist's painstakingly fine lines and subtle gradations of color on this stunning Japanese umbrella this lady is holding. The frame is not included. The creator of this Oshie piece prides herself in using the finest quality antique and vintage kimono and obi fabrics to recreate the works of Japan’s most celebrated traditional paintings, notably in the bijin-ga (beautiful women) tradition. She has created extraordinarily intricate and detailed Oshie pieces for over thirty years. Oshie pieces of this quality are extremely hard to find in Japan and there are only a handfull of artists who are still actively creating new pieces.
