About the Item

Joichi Hoshi "Red Star" Abstract Woodcut This is a colorful framed woodcut print by well-known Japanese printmaker Joichi Hoshi (1913-1979). Hoshi was best known for his depictions of galaxies, constellations, and trees. This piece is an iconic example of his work, depicting a multicolored star floating over a landscape of trees. "Red Star" is titled in Japanese and numbered in pencil lower left as Edition 54/100. It is hand-signed and dated in pencil (1966) lower right. This piece is displayed in its original mahogany-toned wooden frame. Born in Japan in 1913, artist Joichi Hoshi was a renowned printmaker, famous for his beautiful images of often leafless, ethereal trees. He attended the Musashino University of Fine Arts and worked for several years as a teacher before beginning to create his own artistic prints. Before focusing on trees, Joichi Hoshi’s prints were often images of the stars and constellations, which he loved to observe from the darkness of Mongolia. After drawing an image on a woodblock, Hoshi would carve the wood to create the template for a print. Joichi Hoshi's prints were then transferred to paper, often in a single color for a stark, monochromatic look that was sometimes accented by gold leaf. As an artist, Joichi Hoshi had a short career, but museums throughout the world display his works. His works can be found in the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Cincinnati Art Museum, among others. Measurements are as follows: Framed Piece - 10" W x 11.5" H x 1D Image Size - 3.75" W x 5.75" H
