Large stained glass art work by Hubert Felix, Netherlands 1966

About the Item

Rare stained glass artwork by Hubert Felix. Signed and dated 1966. Hubert designed and made some pieces himself but mostly made stained glass pieces for other artists. It measures 136cm in width and 125cm in height. The piece is set in a solid hardwood frame. Felix was educated at the Secondary Arts School in Maastricht as a pupil of Jos Postmes, Jef Scheffers and Charles Vos. In 1934 he started his own studio for stained glass, initially on the St. Pietersstraat, later in the Kleine Looiersstraat in Maastricht. Felix designed windows himself, but mainly carried out designs for others, including Gène Eggen, Jérôme Goffin, Marianne van der Heijden, Jos Hermans, Paul Kromjong, Hubert Levigne, Huub Loontjens, Frans Nols, Henri Schoonbrood, Frans Slijpen, Jacques Vonk and Daan Wildschut. In addition to stained glass, glass appliqués and mosaics were made. The highlight of the studio was in the years after the Second World War until the late sixties, after which it mainly focused on the restoration of windows. Hubert Felix also exported stained glass to the United States and Canada, in these two countries some ninety churches were provided with windows. Also in Indonesia are his stained glass-looded windows. Hubert Felix married Jacqueline Antoinette Adang (1919-2006) in 1942. They had four children, three daughters and a son. Their son Gerard (1952) took over the company after the death of his father in 1986.
