About the Item

M. Fleischer’s intriguing large scale work of art challenges what we commonly consider “painting.” The work itself is a sheet of paper, creased to create a richly textured surface. The chaotic, clustered, peaks resemble a birds-eye view of a mountain range. Paper with dimension… one could argue that this is a form of relief sculpture. Reds, indigo, teal, blue, violet, white, and even hints of yellow explode from this dynamic surface. Fleischer has captured a magnificent geological or astronomical event. Are we witnessing the birth of new terrain emanating from the Earth’s crust? Maybe Fleischer is emulating the brilliant dance of color found in a celestial nebula. It’s easy for one to become entranced by the large scale, nearly 4ft square, painting. The viewer is literally drawn into the image… there is a deep-set well matte. The original owner spared no expense when framing this piece. The artwork is housed in a silver colored metal frame that’s over 2.5″ thick. A deep, teal, suede-like matte provides an elegant compliment to the work. The piece is protected by a pane of acrylic. The painting is signed “M. Fleischer, 1987.” 43.25” Wide x 2 5/8” Deep x 48.25” High No damage to art. Frame has some scratches at the top edge (see photos).

Robert Patrick Painted Acrylic over Vinyl Textile Fiber Art, 1991
Located in Chattanooga, TN
In this compelling late-20th century composition, Robert Patrick transcends the boundary between painting and textile, forging a luminous hybrid of color, texture, and sculptural depth. Executed in 1991, this work showcases acrylic layered onto vinyl textile fiber, the result: a surface that appears to breathe and shift, responding to light and perspective. At approximately 19 by 23½ inches (with a depth of 3 inches), the piece commands an intimate yet powerful presence on the wall. It is signed by the artist and retains authenticity typical of his mature period. What sets this piece apart is the dialogue between material and gesture. The vinyl fiber substrate introduces softness and dimensional relief; the acrylic pigment overlays, in hues that dance between subtle tonalities and bold contrasts, animate the underlying weave with fluid strokes. This interplay gives the impression that the surface is alive — that threads may pulse or shift under one’s gaze. Viewed from different angles, patterns of light and shadow travel across ridges and valleys of fiber. Areas of tension and release appear: in some parts, the acrylic is taut and flat; in others, it recedes, opening micro-shadows that deepen the sense of spatial layering. The edges, slightly irregular, emphasize the work’s handcrafted integrity rather than mechanical perfection. Condition is excellent for its age. Wear is consistent with careful display — minimal fraying to the vinyl edge, no significant discoloration or compromise to the acrylic layers — all preserving the vigorous energy of its original execution. This is more than a decorative object; it is a distilled statement piece embodying the tension and poetry of late 20th-century material experiments. As a singular work from Patrick’s evolving practice, it commands attention as both art and artifact — one that enriches the collection it joins and invites sustained contemplation.
