About the Item
Les Argonautes - Mid-Century Modern French Ceramic, Saint Michael - 1960s, Signed
Glazed ceramic plate representing St Michel. It is a decorative work of very beautiful size. There is a nice contrast between the liveliness of the colors of the enamel and the raw nature of the clay used.
It is in an excellent condition and signed in hollow on the back.
Founded by Isabelle Ferlay and Frédérique Bourguet in 1953, Les Argonautes is a ceramic workshop in Vallauris. It is impossible to evoke the golden age of ceramics in Vallauris without mentioning the Argonautes workshop. Taken from Greek mythology, the name Argonauts refers to the adventures of the heroes who left the island of Iolcos on board the ship Argo to find the Golden Fleece.
Both artists create decorative plaques in relief, mirrors, large vases, zoomorphic sculptures inspired by exotic birds, mermaids and religious figures. With colorful and cheerful glazes.
