Rustic Dogon Style African Granary Door Framed
Located in New York, NY
Door panel in the style of a Dogon Tribe granary door panel, carved wood. Mounted in custom painted metal shadow box frame. The Dogon, subsistence farmers who hold ancient animist beliefs, are one of central Mali's ethnic groups. In the 15th century, or even earlier, perhaps fleeing a wave of Islamization, they settled along the 100-mile-long Bandiagara Cliffs, which rise just above this village. The Dogon displaced the indigenous Tellem people, who had used caves and cliff Dwellings as granaries and burial Chambers, a practice the Dogon adopted. They built their villages on the rocky slopes below. Today, the majority of the estimated 500,000 Dogon remain purely animist (the rest are Muslims and Christians), their ancient culture based on a triumvirate of gods. Ritual art, used to connect with the spiritual world through prayer and supplication, can still be found in caves and shrines. Dogon doors...

Early 20th Century Tribal Zulu Mat Rack Panel, South Africa
Located in New York, NY
A carved and mat rack Zulu panel. This wooden panel was inspired from the construction of Zulu mat racks, called Ibhaka or Amabhaxa. It was produced by Tivenyanga Qwabe, one of three brothers living in the Nongoma or Ceza area. Amabhaxa were often painted, but those made by Tivenyanga were carved in relief, and then decorated with pokerwork (scorched in places with a hot poker). The panel depicts wild animals as well as a young man and woman and a married man and woman. Qwabe and his two brothers were commissioned by members of their own Community to carve amongst things, wooden dolls, and walking sticks and mat racks for storage of grass sleeping mats. They also recognized the potential for selling these objects to a white market...
