ALBERT-CHARLES-AUGUSTE RACINET
The first edition of Racinet's highly influential L'Ornement Polychrome was published by Firmin-Didot, 1869-1873. Along with Owen Jones's The Grammar of Ornament, it remains one of the most important works on the history of ornament to influence architects, designers and decorators who look to the past to see the future. The work featured luxurious gold and silver metallic inks and provided a visual record of the decorative arts from antiquity to the 18th Century in architecture, metalwork, textiles, painting, woodworking and porcelain masterpieces. The huge success of the first edition led to a second, produced in 1885-1887, also by Firmin-Didot. Subsequent printings followed such as an english version published by Henry Sotheran and Co., though the quality of the originals is unmatched as it was carried out by some of the best commercial artists of the day and are considered fine works of art in their own right.
