About the Item

A set of reclaimed Minton blue and white glazed tiles depicting a panoramic seascape. Comprising of 95 six-inch tiles and displayed on a custom made angled board, the panel shows a beautiful scene of men on a fishing boat with many more on the horizon. Expertly hand-painted, the tiles display the scene in a deep blue with a crisp white background and desirable crazing. A striking set to be displayed in a variety of ways, perhaps set into a wall, as floor tiles in the entranceway of a grand home, or above the top of a large period fireplace. Provenance These tiles were commissioned by Sir James Knott for his home in Cullercoats. This influential man was a 1st Baronet (1855 - 1934), shipping magnate, and Conservative Party politician. The scene was removed from the wall in Knott's former home many years ago during renovations to the property. The last photo is of a monochrome photograph showing the tiles in their original setting. Signed Mintons Ltd to one of the tiles on the lower left hand-side (see sixth picture).
