About the Item

These two etchings "Cervantes" and "El Cid" are from Dali's Spanish Luminaries Series. Both are accompanied with the stamp of the Societe' de Verification de la Nouvelle Internatinal of New York and Paris and were sold thru The Collectors Guild LTD. The first publishing was done in 1965 and was signed in the plate and pencil signed in the lower right by the artist. a second publishing occurred in 1968 and are not pencil signed. Both of theses prints came framed and have not been examined outside of the frame by us, we assume they are not pencil signed but are by the artist. Dali was born may 11 1904 in the costal region of Spain. He was the son of a prosperous notary and lived in a happy home with love and affection and financial security. His works throughout his life reflect his affections for his native country and the Spanish costal life and landscapes he was so familiar with. Dali first attended the San Fernando Academy of Art in Madrid. His extreme talent led to his first one man show in Barcelona in 1925. He became internationally known when three of his paintings were included in the third annual Carnegie International Exhibition of 1928. In 1929 Dali had his first one man show in Paris. At this time he joined the Surrealist movement. Also in that same year he meet his soon to be wife Gala who was then married to the poet Paul Eluard. He soon became a major leading surrealist figure leading to many clashes with the powers within the movement. His apolitical nature ensured that Dali would clash with the movement's founder Anre Breton. This conflict and his on independence under Gala's support lead to his expulsion from the group after a "Trial" in 1934. He continued however to show with the surrealist in international exhibitions thru out the decade. His mature classical works exhibited a personal style combined with science and religion both themes which fascinated him throughout his artistic career. Dali was given a retrospective in 1941 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and this was followed by the publishing of his autobiography in 1942. Other retrospectives followed in the 1970's in Paris and London. As well as having major pieces throughout the world's museum collections Dali has two large museums devoted to him one in this country in Florida and one in Spain. His work output covers many forms including oil painting, water colors, drawings, etchings, sculpture, film, jewelry, photography and the staging of performance pieces even holographic art and illusion. Dali died in 1989 from heart failure.
