About the Item

A set of seven graphite on paper sketches by American Realist Painter John Koch (1909-1978). Each uniquely framed by Raul Giansante of Argentina (known for framing art by Dali, Zuniga, Bacon and others). John Koch was born in Toledo, Ohio on August 18, 1909 and Raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He traveled to Paris at the age of nineteen and stayed for five years, studying independently and supporting himself by drawing commissioned portraits. In 1929 his work was exhibited at the Salon des Tulieries and Salon du Printemp. He returned to New York City five years later where he would remain for the rest of his life. He had his first New York Exhibition at Valentine Dudensing Gallery in 1935 and in 1939 he signed with Charles W. Kraushaar Gallery where his first show sold out. He went on the exhibit there regularly and in 1940 he was in a group show at the Whitney Museum titled "Forty Under Forty". In 1950 one of his works was exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the show "American Painting Today", while another work was featured on the cover of Life Magazine. His portrait of Princess Margaret was also featured on the cover of Time Magazine in 1955. Koch is best known for his light-filled realist paintings of urban interiors, often featuring classical allusion, and set in his own Manhattan apartment. Much of his work is made up of portraits and social scenes, including cocktail parties and scenes with the artist at work with his models. He was a mentor of the painter Charles Pfahl. Provenance: In October 1981, Dora Koch (John Koch's Wife) presented Raul Giansante (Master Framer of Koch's work) with these studies. The studies had been used to execute Koch's life-size images onto canvas as oil on canvas paintings.
