About the Item
Three drawings of boxers by Tony Sisti. Sisti was a master draftsman. With just a few lines he captures the moment. Sisti was a professional boxer and an accomplished artist. He was able to see the subject from the view point of the boxer and the artist. The seated boxers measure 18" x 17.5". The standing boxer measures 15" x 10.5".
A long-time painter and teacher in Buffalo, New York, Anthony "Tony" Sisti was also a muralist and drawing specialist. As a WPA* artist during the Depression, he did murals in western New York including one at the Rivera Restaurant in Buffalo, New York. The mural, whose subject was male laborers, was 100 feet long and 9 feet high.
Often he chose boxing subjects, something he knew first hand because he was Bantam Weight Champion for the state of New York. From 1932 to 1938, Sisti was a teacher of painting and anatomy at the Buffalo Art Institute*, and then he taught at the New York School of Applied Design for Women* in New York City.
Sisti was born in Greenwich Village and studied in Buffalo at the Albright Art School* with Urquhart Wilcox. After that he attended the Florence Academy of Art* Florence, Italy from 1925 to 1931, and there earned a doctor's degree with Felice Carena. He also studied anatomy at St. Mary's Hospital in Florence.
Memberships included the Buffalo Society of Art, and he exhibited his work with the Salons of America*, the Museum of Modern Art and the Albright Knox Art Gallery.
