Woodland Scene with Pan and Three Graces
About the Item
At once fantastical and earthbound, this remarkable drawing depicts three seminude goddesses -- perhaps the Three Graces -- dancing to a tune provided by a nude Pan figure seated on the woodland floor. All four figures are depicted with a solidity that is reminiscent of symbolist painters like Fernand Khnopff. Gargiulo surrounds his figures with a shower of tree boughs and includes a sheep at the feet of Pan, but he lavishes his attention on the strength and sensuosity of the figures. Gargiulo, the artist, may have lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
