About the Item

Amazing and beautiful work of art, Italian Baroque, "Allegory of tmusic or St Cecilia" artibuted to Carracci or workshop. Annibale Carracci was born in Bologna, and most likely learned within his family. In 1582, Annibale, his older brother Agostino and his cousin Ludovico, opened a painting workshop, at first called the Academy of the Desiderosi (Desirous of Fame and Learning), later called the Incamminati (Progressives; literally, "of those who open a new road"). Finally the School of the Eclectics. The main objective of the three Carracci was to renew the painting, which they understood had degenerated during Mannerism and which they also saw as endangered by the naturalism of Caravaggio, which some nicknamed "Antichrist of art". Annibale Carracci (Bologna, November 3, 1560 - Rome, July 15, 1609) was an Italian painter and engraver of the Baroque, belonging to the current of Romano-Bolognese classicism. He is the most famous member of the Carracci dynasty of painters. Considered Caravaggio's rival, he embodied an artistic option opposite to his.The Carraccis placed a special emphasis on typically Florentine line drawing, exemplified by Raphael and Andrea del Sarto, as opposed to the apparently sloppy, unsketched designs of Caravaggio. But they were also interested in the Venetian attention to the use of rich and more highly nuanced colour, with atmospheric effects, especially the works of the Venetian oil painter Titian, which Annibale and Agostino studied during their travels throughout Italy in 1580-81 at the behest of the eldest of the Caracci Lodovico. This eclecticism would become the defining trait of the artists of the Emilian Baroque or Bolognese school, including the most prominent followers of the Carracci: Domenichino and Reni. This is an exceptional painting with a grat pictorial quality and a high aesthetic vision of the composition. The measurements without frame are: 68 x 54 cm The frame wood is from the 18th century.
