About the Item

Outstanding painting , 17 th century , "Virgen del Popolo", oil on canvas.Relined The iconography of the Virgen del Popolo is a Marian dedication that has its origins in a Byzantine icon from the 6th century, called Salus Populi Romani, which is venerated in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. It was in Rome where this representation began to be used, which finally reached Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries. Normally it was used as the title image for the foundations of pious and generous people, since in Spanish it means "Virgin of the People". The Virgin and Jesus faithfully repeat the clothing of the Byzantine icon. Thus, the mantle is deep blue, adorned with golden brocades, made in great detail. Likewise, the starry halo of mother and son, made with fine gold, is always represented. Despite the fact that rigorous frontality prevails in this type of representation, Mary's face is in three quarters as she gently approaches the child. However, in this case, the child, instead of being held by his mother, is standing on the windowsill and carrying an orb, instead of the Gospels. Something that also differs from the canonical iconography is the rosary that the Virgin holds in her right hand. Stylistic analysis The work exudes great mastery. The drawing predominates, which delimits and outlines the forms. The colour has been applied in a conventional manner, and the shading used for the volumes is somewhat harsh. In the conception of space, the likelihood of appreciable depth is sought, for example, in the window. Due to the close commercial and cultural contact, in these centuries, of Spain and Italy with the American Viceroyalties, it is difficult to attribute this work to a specific space, since all three share the same forms. Although it is true that this iconography was very common in colonial art, it may also belong to the Castilian or even Italian School. We are studying the attribution of this fascinating work.
