About

Ancient painting of large dimensions executed by a master of the French schools of the seventeenth century, the pictorial quality is very high enriched by well represented details with choice of expertly defined colors. The portrait represents Saint Augustine of Hippo during a meditation and reading pose. Saint Augustine was born in Africa in Tagaste, in Numidia, currently Souk-Ahras in Algeria on 13 November 354 from a family of small landowners. From his mother he received a Christian education, but after reading Cicerone's Ortensio he embraced philosophy by adhering to Manichaeism. The trip to Milan dates back to 387, where he met Saint Ambrose. The meeting proves to be important for Augustine's journey of faith: it is from Ambrose that he receives baptism. Later he returned to Africa with the desire to create a Community of monks, after the death of his mother he went to Hippo, where he was ordained a priest and bishop. His theological, mystical, philosophical and polemical works the latter reflect the intense struggle that Augustine undertook against heresies, to which he dedicates part of his life are still studied. Augustine deserved the title of Doctor of the Church for his thought, enclosed in texts such as "Confessions" or "City of God". While Hippo is besieged by the Vandals, in 429 the saint became seriously ill. He died on August 28, 430 at the age of 76.
