17th Century Saint Anthony of Padua with the Child Jesus Oil on round panel, 20 x 22 cm - with frame 36 x 39 cm The small painting in question, characterized by a curious support such as the round and convex table, depicts St. Anthony of Padua with the Franciscan robe and tonsure, typical of the brotherhood of which he was a part, in adoration of the Child Jesus. Attributes of the Saint they are the white lily, symbol of virginity and purity, and above all the Baby Jesus, which refers to the episode in which Antonio was enlightened by the vision he had in Camposampiero, the place of his spiritual retreat near Padua. The Child also expresses his attachment to the humanity of Christ and his intimacy with God. The work is distinguished by the powerful realism impressed on the expression of the saint who observes adoring the Child, who looks at him in turn, giving life to a game of glances that involves the observer but at the same time does not allow him to actively participate in the episode. Saint Anthony was born in Portugal, in Lisbon, in 1195. The son of noble parents, we know that he was baptized with the name of Fernando. He spent the first years of training under the guidance of the canons of the Duomo. In 1220 Fernando came into contact with the Friars Minor, religious animated by Francis of Assisi in distant Italy. In fact, the relics of five Franciscan missionaries tortured and killed in Morocco were brought to Coimbra, in the church of Santa Croce, right where Fernando was. Probably the most in-depth contact with the first Franciscans who arrived in Portugal dates back to this period. The meeting will prove to be fundamental in the young religious's journey of faith: to everyone's surprise, in 1220 he decided to leave the Augustinian Canons to join the followers of Francis of Assisi. For the occasion, he abandoned his old first name to take that of Antonio. Antonio developed a strong vocation to mission and, in particular, to martyrdom: and with this ideal he left for Morocco. When he arrived in Morocco, however, Antonio fell seriously ill: he was forced to rest and could no longer preach. After some time - not recovering - all he had to do was surrender to God's will and repatriate. But the ship on which he had embarked for the return was pushed by contrary winds to Sicily, with a ruinous shipwreck. From here he went to Assisi: it was the right occasion to meet Francis of Assisi who had summoned all the friars on Pentecost of 1221. Antonio is invited to go to Romagna, to the hermitage of Montepaolo, near Forlì, to devote himself to prayer, mediation and humble service to his brothers. Antonio, for the talents that he shows he knows how to put at the service of the Kingdom of God, also received the post of Minister Provincial (ie guide of the Franciscan fraternities) of northern Italy, in the three-year period 1227-1230. The assignment involved visiting numerous monasteries in northern Italy. Antonio then showed his preference for the city of Padua and the small Franciscan community at the simple church of Santa Maria Mater Domini. Antonio's profound commitment to preaching and the sacrament of reconciliation during Lent 1231 can be considered his great spiritual testament. In 1231, the year of his death, Antonio was buried in Padua, near the small church of Santa Maria Mater Domini, his spiritual refuge during periods of intense apostolic activity.
