Francesco Lavagna (Naples 1684-1724) Still life with arrangement of flowers and watermelon Oil on canvas. cm with frame H 75 x W 60 x D 7. only canvas cm W 39 x H 54 The painting, of remarkable quality and in good state of maintenance, represents a sumptuous composition of flowers inserted in an elegant garden. In the foreground you can see some objects in white porcelain with blue decorations and an amphora vase in gilded bronze decorated and embossed. Immediately behind, placed on top of an architectural element in stone, a second earthenware vase is richly decorated with a composition of flowers. Flowering garlands and floral arrangements are laid out and placed around this still life and some spontaneous plants grow around it. At the bottom right is described a watermelon split in half, whose characteristic color balances the scene, cleverly matching with the bright colors of the flowers, mainly on the red magenta and carmine, white and blue gods. On the right, in the second floor, above a stone wall, some trunks of trees are the fifth to the scene. On the left, however, behind a hedge of roses, you can see the remaining garden, with tall trunks and in the distance architectural views above which a blue sky marked by some fluffy clouds makes the composition spacious and deep. Clearly belonging to the Neapolitan school, the canvas shows undisputed similarities with the style of the painter Francesco Lavagna (1684-1724). He is one of the protagonists of Neapolitan naturamortism in the early 18th century. The eighteenth century Neapolitan, in the field of still life, is much appreciated and sought after today both by the antique market and by critics. It was appreciated and much requested in the past by the great collectors and clients, rich lords owners of the most beautiful palaces of Naples and surroundings. Today it is still being studied, and Francesco Lavagna himself has very little information. There are many artists who ventured into naturamortism and their figures are slowly resurfacing from oblivion, allowing critics to outline its stylistic characteristics, grouping corpus of works under some names mainly thanks to the finding of signed works. It is still very difficult to distinguish the hand of some painters such as Giuseppe and Francesco Lavagna and Gaspare Lopez. The same works appear in catalogues and in the antique market sometimes attributed to one, sometimes to the other artist. However, recent studies by institutions such as the Zeri Foundation are beginning to redefine its functions. Francesco Lavagna, as mentioned, was active in Naples in the first half of the 18th century. He is often confused with Giuseppe Lavagna (1652-1732), probably tied to him by a bond of kinship, and also an interpreter of the same kind of painting. The canvas documents very well the expressive qualities of Francesco Lavagna, able to create works never banal and imbued with a descriptive ability, of considerable visual impact, in the rendering of the effects of light, color and matter, marked by a fine and meticulous brush stroke.
