Francesco Zuccarelli (Pitigliano, 1702 - Florence, 1788) Vision of S. Filippo Neri Oil on copper, 26 x 22 cm; with frame 35 x 31 cm On the back it bears the inscription Made by Fran Zuccarelli Costa and one La Cornice The copper in question identifies the hand of Francesco Zuccarelli (1702 - 1788) by stylistic and formal approach. Francesco Zuccarelli was born in Pitigliano, in the province of Grosseto, in 1702. He studied in Florence in the workshop of Paolo Anesi (1696 - 1773) and later moved to Rome where he studied the work of Claude Lorrain (1600 - 1682), Nicolas Poussin (1594 - 1665) and Andrea Locatelli (1695 - 1741). Moving to Venice, Zuccarelli turned to Arcadian painting, which he cultivated in competition with Giuseppe Zais (1709-1781) from Belluno. As happened to other Venetian painters of his contemporaries, his painting was highly appreciated abroad where he was called to paint for rich and important patrons. Zuccarelli worked a lot in England where he influenced important local painters; in particular his style was taken up by the great Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792). Among the Italian painters who stayed in England in the eighteenth century, Francesco Zuccarelli was probably the most successful. After five years in London, Zuccarelli returned to Venice. Back in London in 1765, he was one of the founders of the Royal Academy in 1768. He returned to Italy in 1773 rich and admired by the British public. He worked and had other large commissions for over 75 years in particular for villas and palaces of the Venetian and Lombard aristocracy but many of his works are still in England today. In this copper he depicts a Vision of St. Philip Neri of the Holy Family with St. Anne and St. Joachim. San Filippo Neri, a pilgrim who became a priest in Rome, was entrusted by Pope Gregory XIII, in 1575, with the church of S. Maria in Vallicella, where the following year he had a vision of the Virgin, a vision taken up and reworked from an iconographic point of view. by many artists in the following centuries. The gentle vibrations of the brushstroke unmistakably refer to the style of Zuccarelli who in the figures and in the landscape fully manifests his pictorial vivacity, in an open and airy spatial dimension, albeit in a small size, fully expressing that sense of idyll and arcadia that characterizes his work. An interesting stylistic comparison can be found with an Adoration of the Shepherds preserved at the University of Oxford or with a Sermon of St. John the Baptist preserved in Glasgow, at the Glasgow Museum Resource Center.
