$675

About

From France, a nautical theme reverse glass painting of a 19th century Frigate under full sail on the sea – “Frigate Sur la Mer.” circa late 19th – early 20th century. Reverse painting on glass is a traditional art form where the artist applies paint to a piece of glass, and the image is then viewed by turning the glass over. The painting is preserved behind the glass when framed. This technique was wildly popular during the early to mid 19th century. Beautifully colored and rendered in a wonderful palette of blues, greens and creamy whites with an attention to detail. The painting is framed in black lacquered wood with a wood backing and an ornate brass hanger. Artist unknown. Outer frame dimensions: 12 in. L x 8 W x .75 H The frame is .50 in. W on the front. One of a pair, offered individually. Very good condition, showing the expected light wear.
