About the Item

This wonderful early depiction of a Norwich Terrier is by the sought after British artist Emily Lawton Barnard, nee Cummins (active 1881 – 1911). Emily Barnard was an artist, author and an illustrator who worked in London. She wrote and illustrated the book ‘A book of good wishes’. For an example of her work please see her 1892 portrait of the Lord Mayor of York, Phillip Mathews. Ascension number MHCPA.1892.1 York Guidhall. Emily was born in Cork, Ireland in 1840 and died in 1911. She married William Barnard on the 12 July 1870 in Buckland, St Mary, Surrey, England. Her father was Nicholas Marshall Cummins (b 1808 – d 1885); he held the office Justice of Peace for Cork, her mother was Sarah Ann Swete. This charming watercolor portrait is wonderfully original and untouched; it is housed behind its original glass set within its original ornate gilded Art Nouveau frame with tudric and floral decoration. This portrait is fresh to the market. Condition: The frame is in original condition being free from restoration, therefore there is some bumping and flaking to the gesso edges. The backing paper is partially visible along the right edge of the paper. Measuring: Frame width 9.75 inch (14.5 cm) by height 12.5 inch (32 cm). Framed depth 0.5 inch (2 cm). Aperture width 6 5/8 inch (17 cm) by height 9 5/8 inch (24.5 cm). The painting is fresh to the market and has an attractive subject matter, the perfect item for anyone who loves all things Art Nouveau or has a love of dogs. As mentioned previously this is a very early depiction of the breed.
