19th Century French Antique Painting of "Good Wine" by Jean Pezous

About the Item

This is a vivid and charming little scene capturing a group of friends enjoying a sunny summer afternoon of games at a rural tavern in the middle of wheat fields. The tavern has a faint block inscription reading "Bon Vin" or "Good Wine". Shadows dance along the dusty ground from the shade of the tall trees surrounding the yard and a couple can be seen strolling through the wheat field in the distance. It is a warm and nostalgic genre scene full of character and descriptive story telling in it's petite dimensions - the faces and body language of the participants is most telling. One young woman watches the player closely, her companion looking at the seated gentleman who seems to be holding a conversation with her; a younger figure leans against a tree with a certain disinterest, which coupled with his somewhat sloppy dress suggest something of his character. The standing gentleman looks carefully and respectfully on as the player readies his throw, probably the main competitor in this match. Jean Pezous was born in Toulon, France in March of 1815. He studied with Senequier, who taught at the nautical school. He then went to Paris and studied under Orsel. He lived for a time at Bondy (Seine-St-Denis) and from 1846 to 1880 exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon. Pezous produced a large number of small paintings on a variety of different subjects, often introducing many figures.
