Beautiful oil painting on canvas, 1890s. Excellent pictorial quality. Signed by an Italian important artist Antonio Baronio. The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been one of the main objectives of painters and sculptors of all times. The representation of the nude is the maximum expression of this aspiration, transversal to all ages and to all stylistic currents. In fact, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and the various classicisms, which aim at a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude was also a protagonist within the new aesthetic concepts brought by the historical avant-gardes, as in Cubism, in the Expressionism and Surrealism. The interpretation of this figure of a child is perfectly in line with the academic culture of painting between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The high bill of this work, in fact, shows us the search towards a total naturalistic rendering. The black background from which the resigned figure emerges, in an almost casual pose, of the child makes us think of a certain Caravaggesque inspiration. Biographical note Cesare Calchi Novati (1858-1939) Cesare Calchi Novati was a Milanese artist born in 1858 and died in 1939. He trained at the Brera Academy under the guidance of Bertini and Butti. From 1881 he participated in many exhibitions, especially at the Annuali Braidensi. He was a painter specialized in particular in floral compositions, landscapes and still lifes. He was also a skilled portraitist.
