Artist: Unknown (style of Eugene Delacroix (1798-1863).
Date: 19th century Title: French lieutenant on horseback leading a Bedouin cavalry.
Medium: Oil on canvas (linen background with original frame)
Size: 36.5 x 28 cm (unframed)
Additional: There are no markings or signatures on either the front or back.
Small painting depicting a French officer on horseback in the uniform of the French North African Army of the 1830s season. Surrounded by a Bedouin army. Painted in loose but confident brushstrokes. Used on this canvas, skillfully painted colors similar to those used by Eugene Delacroix at the time of his trip to Morocco circa 1832 (note: use of cadmium red and ultramarine blue with a tache or lead white on the chest of the officers). As one of the main representatives of the French Romantic movement in painting, Delacroix produced numerous works. This painting, although unsigned, bears all the hallmarks of the master's hand.
