19th Century Pompeian genre scene Oil on canvas, 73.5 x 104 cm - with frame 87 x 118 cm The work in question depicts an interior scene in which a woman, half-naked and lying on a triclinium wrapped in light cloths, rests to the music of a flute, played by another young girl, while a third figure waves a fan made of white feathers. The setting is that of a sumptuous Roman residence, where the skins of exotic animals, historiated craters, and murals refer to the lost cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The news of the first occasional findings of cities buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD spread throughout Europe in the mid-eighteenth century. The excavations soon intensified, and the cities of the Neapolitan plain became the most sought-after destination of the “grand tour”, a training experience considered indispensable by artists and writers who flocked to Italy from all over Europe. The frescoes found, with their colors intact, of great expressiveness, depth and brightness, revealed a whole new face of the ancient world. In the luxurious holiday homes of Campania, the Roman aristocracy, far from the strict official obligations of the political and military life of the capital, indulged in their thirst for more refined ways of life, which were at home in Campania felix. Pompeian painting was thus absorbed by contemporary painters that throughout the nineteenth century they reworked the suggestions of new discoveries. With this in mind, this painting must be read, where the red background of the walls becomes the transgressive emblem of the sumptuous Pompeian painting. The erotic and lascivious atmosphere, as well as elements that refer to the exotic world, are instead the result of that current called Orientalism; cultural that leads to the rediscovery of the East; it spreads mainly in England and France, it began in the last years of the eighteenth century and found its greatest diffusion in the nineteenth century, especially following Napoleon's expedition to Egypt in 1798.
