About the Item
This original oil painting on canvas depicts a forlorn young couple sitting on/by a large rock at ocean's edge, either lost, shipwrecked, or possibly exploring. He gazes at a map, despondently, his compass by his elbow, and she sits at his feet gazing up at him. A rather stormy background and breaking waves serve to background the couple. Likely English painted in the third quarter of the 19th century. Unsigned.
