About the Item

Beautiful watercolors on paper 1930s by important Italian artist Mario Norfini (1870-1956). Work signed. Pair of painted hunting scenes. Biographical note He was born in Pescia on 4 September 1870, son of the illustrious painter Luigi Norfini. From a very young age he dabbled in drawing animals, and attended the Institute of Fine Arts in Lucca where, in 1892, he obtained special honors in the upper course of painting. An eclectic personality, with an ironic spirit, he led a particularly adventurous existence: when he was just twenty, to follow a trapeze artist he had fallen in love with, he joined the Circus Kröne in Genoa, becoming a lion tamer. Back in Tuscany, the commission of a portrait obtained through his father brought him closer to painting. In 1902, in Viareggio, he created the liberty-style decorations of the Nettuno bathhouse and the famous Caffè Margherita (the latter in collaboration with the Livorno painter Baroni), works that were lost following the fire that destroyed the structures in 1917. He won first prize at the Viareggio Carnival in 1903 with a float dedicated to Guglielmo Marconi. Later he chose to devote himself to teaching at the Institute of Fine Arts in Lucca (his pupil and friend, among others, was the painter Bruno Cordati from Barga). In those years he became friends with Giacomo Puccini and frequented his villa in Torre del Lago assiduously. In 1908 he moved to Milan where, driven by his passion for animals, he began his career as a painter-illustrator. He was a friend of Luigi Ghidini, author of numerous books on hunting subjects. He collaborated with "Corriere della Sera" and "Corriere dei Piccoli", for which he created the characters Porcellino and Biribì. He drew satirical cartoons, caricatures, historical postcards, advertising posters and illustrated children's books and important canine texts, greatly limiting the exhibition activity: he had in fact the habit of entrusting the paintings, on consignment, to well-known armories in Lombardy-Veneto. In his Milanese studio he gave watercolor lessons to students of the Milan and Turin art institutes. In 1940 he married Giuliana Lencioni, a noblewoman of Volterra, who died in 1942 leaving him a son, Luigi. Since then, he led a retired life devoting himself totally to artistic activity. He died in Milan on April 7, 1956.
