"African Coastal Scene" Expressionist Landscape Oil Painting on Canvas
About the Item
Knife painting involves using a palette knife instead of a brush to apply the paint, as in the case of this oil painting. In the context of a seascape at sunset, this technique adds texture and lends an expressive quality to what might be considered a banal scene of a fishing trip as the sun kisses the surface of the water to set. The superimposed strokes created by the knife reinforce the play of light, creating a visual and tactile experience for the viewer where a story is told. The subtle interaction between principally blue, yellow and orange hues, and the explosion of light in the reflection of the sky on the sails, and on the surface of the ocean, are particularly successful.
African coastal scenes, such as those in Senegal, have greatly inspired the artists, the knife painting technique amplifying the raw yet tormented energy of the fishermen's daily lives, the essence of the sea, the warmth of the sunset and the resilience of the people depicted.
Isn't it a question here of daily life repeating itself, from generation to generation, and of an uncertain peace, a future strewn with questions, in the face of changing times, industrialization, pollution, etc. The colors are tormented. What has become of these waters today? The products of fishing so precarious, and the daily lives of traditional fishermen seriously called into question.
We catch a glimpse of the boats, sail-powered pirogues with splint-mounted nets, which can be found in places where traditional fishing still exists, such as Kochi in Kerala.
