Expressionist Landscape by Pawel Kontny

About the Item

Artist Pawel August Kontny (1923-2002) Stunning and expressive landscape. This artist had a minimal approach with the paint, giving us transparency and texture. Thick lines create building outlines. To get to the desired texture, Kontny used a mix of dust marble with oil paint. An earlier piece by Kontny. Made before he moved out of Germany into Denver. In 1960, Pawel Kontny decided to relocate to the Mile High City from Nuremberg, Germany. He had enjoyed a successful career thereafter World War II but, like many artists before him, he quickly became enamored of Colorado’s healthful and sunny climate, the freedom of its wide-open spaces, and the Rocky Mountains that reminded him of the Bavarian Alps. In the early 1960s, he was one of only a few European-born professional artists in the state, a select group that included Herbert Bayer (1900-1985), a member of the prewar Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau, Germany, and Roland Detre (1903-2001), a Hungarian modernist painter. His work, like life itself, is full of contrasts in which objective and abstract art are seen, at times, to touch. This is Kontny’s signature and he follows it up with a masterly change of style and manner. Delicate pastels, stimulating watercolors, and rich oils are all created in their own original form and design. Without distortion, he brings forth a sensuality – an emotion. The dimensions are of the piece as a whole, the painting itself is measured as Width: 31" Height: 23" This painting lives in a unique frame, refer to the photos provided for more detail. Purchased sometime in 1956 from Munich Gallery in Germany.

  • William Thon Mountain Town Calabria Italy Expressionist Oil Landscape Painting
    Located in Dayton, OH
Mid 20th century oil on board landscape painting by William Thon titled "Mountain Town, Calabria," No. 841. Shows a sweeping abstract expressionist landscape featuring the white stucco buildings of a town perched on the green and gold hills of Calabria, Italy, with a backdrop of blue mountains melding with the sky. Signed lower right corner. Label on reverse from Midtown Galleries (New York, New York). Rustic wood frame with red stained recessed bevel and white linen mat. "William Thon (1906-2000) was an American artist noted for highly abstracted landscape paintings. He debuted as a professional artist in 1939 at the Corcoran Gallery Biennial* exhibition. He was born in New York City in 1906, and spent his childhood summers camping on Staten Island. He also developed a great love of travel, and in 1933 made an eight-month voyage to the Cocos Islands in the Pacific. He joined the Navy during World War II, and shortly after the war won the Prix de Rome*, a fellowship in Rome to the American Academy,* which he later served as trustee. Recognition for him continued with his participation in the 1942 "Artists for Victory" exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art*, and in 1944, Midtown Galleries in New York held his first one-person show. This gallery then continued to be his representative throughout his career. He had subsequent solo exhibitions at Smith College Art Museum, Fort Wayne Museum and Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, Maine. He earned an honorary Doctor of Arts from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine in 1957, and was a member of The American Academy* and Institute of Arts and Letters, as well as the National Academy of Design*. In 1947, the year-long study at the American Academy proved highly influential on his career, especially with him beginning to paint as much with watercolor as oil. Returning to America, he submitted a watercolor into the 1949 exhibition of the National Academy of Design, and that year was voted into Academy membership. From thereon, he exhibited frequently at the Academy and won prizes including the Benjamin Altman Prize* in 1951, 1954, 1961, 1967 and 1969. In 1951, Thon received a grant from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He also taught painting at Ohio University, and painted aspects of the Apollo Space Program...
