At the age of 10, he lost both his father and mother and lived with his brother-in-law before joining the workshop of Juan del Castillo (1590-1657), a Sevillian Baroque painter, as an apprentice in 1633. Six years later, he moved to Cadiz where he found a local public by painting inexpensive pictures. Around 1640, he met Pedro de Moya (1610-1660), a Baroque painter who was a student of Antoine Van Dyck (1599-1641) and discovered Flemish painting. Back in Seville, the city's Franciscans commissioned eleven paintings from him for the cloister of their convent (including The Kitchen of the Angels, 1646). He also painted numerous genre scenes in which he excelled (Boy with a Dog, 1650). His local reputation was consolidated and he soon ran a workshop employing many assistants and taking on apprentices. In 1660, he founded the Academy of Fine Arts in Seville and presided over it. Murillo was, along with Diego Velázquez, Francisco de Zurbaran and José de Ribera, one of the great Baroque painters of the 17th century, the Spanish Golden Age, and the leader of the Seville School. Most of his works are of religious inspiration, but he is also well known for his genre paintings, especially of poor children and scenes of daily life. He died on April 3, 1682, following a fall from scaffolding while painting an altarpiece in the Capuchin convent in Cadiz.
