After/Follower of Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, A Dog Guarding Grapes, 1840s
Oil on wooden panel, with fine craquelé, 1840s Very beautiful and expressive representation of a spitz guarding a basket of grapes. The Austrian painter Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller created the model for this painting in 1836 under the title "A dog guards grapes in a basket, in the background view of the Heiligenstadt church and the Danube". The Austrian painter Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller is regarded as one of the most important artists of Austria and of the Biedermeier period as a whole. Waldmüller was born in Vienna in 1793 and attended the Academy of Fine Arts there from 1807 and 1813. As early as 1810 the young artist received the coveted Gundel Prize. He initially worked as a freelance artist and earned his living by painting portraits as a miniaturist and drawing teacher. His marriage to a singer resulted in several changes of residence in the following years; he moved to Baden near Vienna, Brno and Prague. During this time Waldmüller worked as a scenery painter at the theater. In 1817 his wife got an engagement at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna where he lived from now on. In 1823 he was commissioned by a publisher in Leipzig to create one of the most famous portraits of Ludwig van Beethoven. In 1827 he was commissioned to portray Emperor Franz I, which increasingly earned him other commissions from the aristocracy. Between 1825 and 1844 Waldmüller made several study trips to Italy. In 1829 he received a position in the collection of paintings of the academy with the title and rank of a professor. In 1835 Waldmüller became a regular councilor of the academy, in 1836 he created a catalogue of the Gemäldegalerie together with Joseph von Führich (1800-1876), a history painter and painter of religious scenes. However, Waldmüller increasingly came into conflict with the Academy because he preferred studying nature to the academic copying of old masters. The influential politician and diplomat Klemens Wenzel Lothar von Metternich (1773-1859) protected and protected Waldmüller, but was ultimately unable to prevent his reform proposals from being rejected and he first lost his studio at the Academy in 1850 and was suspended from his post in 1857. After a renewed marriage and financial difficulties Waldmüller managed from 1856 onwards to celebrate successes and to exhibit his works. In 1864 he was finally rehabilitated by Emperor Franz Joseph. Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller died at the age of 72 on August 23, 1865 in Hinterbrühl near Vienna. Waldmüller was already a successful and respected artist during his lifetime and is regarded as one of the most important artistic personalities of his time. With his emphatically held opinion that an artist should prefer the precise study of nature and open-air work to academic painting in a studio, he proved to be extraordinarily modern and paved the way for open-air painting. The representation of light and light moods is the central theme of all his works. His works can be found in the most renowned art museums worldwide, such as the Alte Nationalgalerie Berlin, the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna, the Wien Museum, the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, the Museum Oskar Reinhart in Winterthur, the Eremitage in Saint Petersburg, the Galerie Neue Meister in Dresden, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and many other museums.
