In his familiar style the artist Albert Clark has portrayed the bay horse known as Jimmy M in his stable with a rug thrown over the manger, bearing the initials of the owner, and the horses name above.
The painting is mounted in its original wood and gilt frame.
Albert Clark was a highly productive painter specialising in equestrian art. He gained considerable recognition for his skilful portrayal of hunters and racehorses. His canvases frequently capture his subjects within stable surroundings, yet he also created exquisite pieces where his subjects took center stage in larger compositions set against pastoral landscapes. Albert Clark was a member of the illustrious Clark family of artists. His father, James Clark (1812-1884), was a renowned artist, and his two sons, William Albert Clark (1880-1963) and Frederick Albert Clark (1869-1954), followed in their artistic footsteps, achieving notable acclaim for their exceptional focus on equestrian and animal art.
This painting has undergone some ancient and more recent restorations with evidence of some overpainting. Having said that, there are only very subtle signs of the restorations which do not detract at all from its appeal.
